What is GMRS?
GMRS, or the General Mobile Radio Service, is a licensed radio service that operates on specific channels at around 462 MHz and 467 MHz. This service is primarily utilized for short-range, two-way voice communication through handheld radios, mobile radios, and repeater systems. However, in 2017, the FCC made an expansion to the GMRS by permitting the use of short data messaging applications. This includes the ability to send text messages and share GPS location information. Overall, GMRS provides a versatile and convenient means of communication, allowing for both voice and data transmission within a limited range.
Do I need a license?
Yes, it is necessary to have a GMRS license. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) permits GMRS radios to have higher power compared to CB and FRS radios, with a maximum of 50 watts as opposed to the 4 watts allocated to CB radios. The GMRS spectrum is divided into 22 channels, which are shared with FRS radios. Additionally, there are 8 extra repeater channels (Ch23/15R to Ch30/22R) that are exclusively for GMRS and can only be utilized by licensed GMRS operators. GMRS frequencies range from 462.5625 to 467.7250.
How do I get a GMRS License?
You must first register for an FRN (FCC Registration Number) as a Domestic Individual, letting you pay the FCC for the license. Once you receive your FRN, which typically happens moments after submitting the form, you are able to fill out the online application and purchase your GMRS license.
